This week's summary involves learning how to search for books,
articles, and other useful information for our projects through the library’s
website. We also covered logos, pathos and ethos. Logos involves rational
argument that can deal with statistics, facts, definitions, and deductive
reasoning. Pathos appeals to emotion that can involve sad stories. Ethos appeals
to authority or character and can involve celebrities or well known experts. I am familiar with ethos; brands are
always trying to use famous celebrities to sell their brand. This week I
learned that the best arguments have all three arguments: logos, pathos and
ethos. I also got an idea of what social issue my project will be about; minority
high school dropout rates.
I like your topic and definitely think this is something that will be easy for you to find a lot of information on. I just recently watched a documentary called "waiting on superman" and there is probably a lot of information in there that may be able to help you. It highlights bad school systems, schools in bad areas, and why some of the schools have really high dropout rates/are failing. Some of the things you could talk about are family life, teachers with tenure not doing as much for their students in bad schools/areas, and the effects of the students life outside school on their success. Good luck with this topic.
